East Pensacola is often spoken of as being the "heart" of our city. While it does take in most of the eastern areas, it is bordered on the east by Scenic Highway, also known as US Hwy 90, which follows the waterfront along the Pensacola Bay. East Pensacola follows the path of the western banks of Bayou Texar and is across the water from East Hill's Bayview Park. The southeastern area is locally known as East Pensacola Heights, another popular neighborhood.
Over 6,000 acres of Pensacola were originally owned by Henry Baars and his wife, Mary Ellison Dunwody Baars. Over the years, their landholdings were sold and today's developments resulted. The Cordova Park community is one of Pensacola's most popular - boasting over 1,200 homes, and four public parks. Dunwody Park and Baars Park were donated to the city by their descendants.
"Cordova" was named after the Spanish city of Cordoba, a favorite destination Henry and Mary enjoyed in their travels. At one time, the couple built a 14-room estate on the eastern shore of Bayou Texar. Today it has been demolished, but the entrance to the mansion remains as a historic site, the canopied 12th Avenue Tree Tunnel.
East Pensacola is favored for its central location with easy access to the Bay and the downtown district. Much of the real estate that makes up East Pensacola includes the business district surrounding Cordova Mall and Sacred Heart Hospital. Points of interest include Pensacola International Airport, the Roger Scott Athletic Complex, and Pensacola State College. Retail and restaurant attractions abound here, such as Cordova Mall, Target Plaza, Hamilton Business Park, and a Carmike Cinema. The larger neighborhoods are Cordova Park, Whispers at Cordova, the Reserve at Carpenters Creek, and are home to the acclaimed Cordova Elementary School.
Spanish Trail Road runs parallel to Scenic Highway inland, from Creighton Rd to Summit Blvd. Just south of Creighton Rd between Spanish Trail Rd and Hwy 289 is where the Spanish Trail area of subdivisions can be found. Some of the most popular neighborhoods here include Brittany Forge, Montage, Tierra Verde, Belvedere Park, and Scenic Heights. These are all beautiful communities which have their own pages linked above.
